A public hearing is slated on Sept. 12 at Jersey Shore Borough Council authorizing the borough to create with Porter Township and Old Lycoming Township the Lycoming Regional Police Department.
The hearing is scheduled to take place at the borough building at 232 Smith St. in Jersey Shore at 7 p.m., according to legal notice in the Sun-Gazette.
It is an initial legal step in the continuing process to explore regionalization of the Old Lycoming Township Police Department and Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police Department, according to Linda Mazzullo, township board chair, who was reached by telephone Thursday.
"We also are planning to have a similar public hearing and vote on a similar ordinance," she said.
"We will advertise our ordinance in the near future and are coordinating our meeting with Hepburn and Lycoming townships," she said.
The two townships have police contracts with Old Lycoming Township.
The township's public hearing on an ordinance may not be able to be scheduled until later this month or in October, Mazzullo said.
James Sortman, a retired district judge and member of Concerned Citizens of Old Lycoming Township, said he, too, noticed the announcement of the public hearing.
