$20M investment at Maynard Street viewed as newest city gateway

By Mark Maroney 2 min read

City of Williamsport officials view Maynard Street from Interstate 180 to West Third Street as one of three gateways leading into the city.

A newly planned $20 million investment at Maynard and First streets by Famvest, the State College firm that is putting investment into the Lycoming Mall, is considered to be a game-changer on the corridor.

The strip also is the Pathway to Health, leading to Campbell Street, Little League Boulevard and Walnut Street and the UPMC Williamsport campus.

Famvest wants to build a national gas station chain and fast-food restaurant along with other tenants that it owns on 6.5 acres.

Pennsylvania College of Technology has a new fence at the entrance off Maynard Street, and the proposal also includes working with the city to make pedestrian access to the Maynard Street development easier and safer.

Councilman Eric Beiter, chair of the city Economic Revitalization Committee, viewed the progress as important to growing the city economically.

Mayor Derek Slaughter said he also is working with Famvest officials, as the project goes to a second reading for an ordinance to transfer about $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds for sewer and water infrastructure for the development.

Jason Fink, president and CEO of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, was said to be instrumental in helping facilitate the Famvest project on Maynard Street.

Councilman Randy Allison referenced the Maynard Street corridor as one of three gateways into the city including Basin and Market streets.

The names of the businesses that are looking to locate at the Maynard Street property remain undisclosed due to a non-disclosure agreement that helped the tenants to feel more at ease.

The second reading of the ordinance to transfer $1 million-plus of ARPA will be done by council in the near future.
