Piatt Township woman loses everything in devastating camper fire

JERSEY SHORE — The local chapter of the American Red Cross is helping a Piatt Township woman who lost everything she owned Thursday afternoon when a two-alarm fire ripped through her camper and its addition at the Susquehanna Campground off of Route 220, according to Shane Newvine, assistant EMS chief for the Citizens Hose Company.

No one was injured in the blaze that erupted at 460 Susquehanna Drive about 2:15 p.m, Newvine said. The woman, whose name was not released, was in the 38-foot long camper at the time, but she managed to safely escape, he said.

She, like many others, live year round at the campground.

The fire originated in the camper’s bedroom and quickly engulfed the addition, Newvine said. Heavy smoke from the blaze was visible from the Thomas Street interchange, about 3 miles west.

Firefighters from Citizens Hose and Independent Hose responded on the initial alarm, but additional manpower and equipment from Antes Fort, Woodward Township, Old Lycoming Township, Nippenose Valley and Avis were soon dispatched to the scene.

Newvine said it took firefighters about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control. Using tankers, firefighters shuttled water to the scene from a hydrant at Route 287, about two miles away, he said. Some brush around the camper caught fire, but it was quickly contained.

A state police fire marshall responded to the scene and determined the fire was accidental, caused by smoking.

Starting at $2.99/week.
