Avelo Airlines and Southern Airways eyeing Williamsport Regional Airport for flights

The return of commercial flights to Williamsport Regional Airport may become a reality in 2023, according to the airport's top official.
Airport Executive Director Richard Howell reported that Avelo Airlines as well as Southern Airways are each eyeing the airport for flight service.
Discussions with Southern, he told the Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority, have been moving along.
"We are cautiously optimistic with having service in the summer," he said.
Meanwhile, he noted that Avelo, which serves more than 30 destinations in the U.S., has requested marketing information as well as a meeting with airport officials.
He noted that Avelo, a relatively new commercial carrier, has been moving into smaller airport markets such as Williamsport.
Headquartered in Houston, it reportedly offers low-cost fares and provides flight destinations to several Florida cities.
Last year, Southern Airways officials considered flying nine-passenger planes out of Williamsport before pulling the plug on those plans.
The airport has been without commercial flights since 2021 when American Airlines ended local service.
In other matters, the Authority approved PSI Plumbing Solutions, York, for the sewer project at a cost of $134,499.
The work includes replacement of two pumps.
It was reported that bids were received from two firms for runway work.
HRI's bid of $2.4 million was the lowest of the bids received.
The other bid of $3.1 was from Glen O. Hawbaker.
The authority approved a $26,783 payment to Lundy Construction Co. Inc. for the air traffic control tower project.
The renovation work is expected to begin May 1 and be completed in 60 days.
The Authority met in executive session following the meeting to consider lease matters.
The next meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13 at the airport terminal building.
