Williamsport City Council approved getting solar sensors to monitor stream levels in Grafius Run to better alert city Public Works Department employees when flooding is about to occur.
A resolution awarding WSP amendment for Grafius Run instrumentation was approved for $157,632 to purchase and install four water level monitor sensors, two upstream for quicker notice.
The company is already working for $60,000 on design of retention ponds and the city is eyeing potential automated trash rack systems that would clear debris from the stream to prevent street flooding.
The cost for the solar sensors would come from the Grafius Run account of $300,000.
The flood mitigation design and eventual installation of equipment is considered a step toward long overdue flood risk reduction for the neighborhoods impacted by the stream flooding, which has been a frequent plight for the city for decades.
Now that the permission is granted the sensors will be quickly installed, Jon Sander, city engineer, said.
