HUGHESVILLE -- Bidding is scheduled to begin Thursday for the Ashkar Elementary construction project, following the approval by the Lycoming County Planning Commission, Superintendent Mark Stamm reported at a recent school board meeting.
Advertising for bids began this week and will run for three consecutive weeks in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Stamm explained.
The district is still waiting for approval for the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit which is required for any point source discharge into waters in the state.
"There's about a 50-day time period on that," Stamm said.
"We're down to about 20 some odd days before they have to give us feedback. We're watching it closely and working with our engineers and architects to work with any comments that come back with that process, " he added.
Bids will be due by May 4 and will be ready for review by the board on May 9. Final approval will be at the May 23 board meeting.
Under personnel, the board approved hiring the following persons for the positions and rate of pay listed if applicable: Karen Henry, full-time custodian at Ashkar at $13.61 per hour; Clinton Swartz, secondary science teacher, $80,750; Debra London, RN, added to the daily substitute teacher/support staff/guest teacher listing; and Molly Fuller, assistant volleyball coach, $2,776.
The resignation of Alex Dwyer, band director, was received and accepted by Stamm.
The board approved transferring $128,100 of the PSERS-OPEB assigned fund balance to a new assigned fund balance for the Health Saving Account. These funds will be used in the budget for the upcoming school year to help offset the one-time expense of the second year of the 50% funding of the health savings account for professional staff.
The Nutrition Inc. 2023-24 food service operations budget was approved by the board. Nutrition Inc.'s guaranteed return on the district's food service program is projected to be a surplus of $51,529.
The purchase of web-based controls for the High School rooftop replacement equipment were approved at a cost of $128,378 from Automated Logic Contracting Services, Inc.
An agreement between the district and the River Valley Regional YMCA was also approved.
The next meeting of the board will be at 7 p.m., April 11 in the high school library. The public should enter through the library vestibule doors.
