Hughesville Borough Council at its recent meeting agreed to vacate an alley to allow a funeral home to expand its operations.
Michael Hacker, of McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, requested to take over the road located between his main building for the business at 557 E. Water St. and a property behind it.
Hacker told council he needs additional space for his funeral business and has no plans to limit public access through the alley.
"I can't imagine having a lot of issues with it," Councilman Dan Cale said. "It will increase the value of the property. So, actually it's a benefit to the borough in the end."
A concern raised by borough officials is the occasional collection of water following wet weather events in sections of the alley.
Christy Phillips, Borough resident, told council she felt she was wrongly issued two parking tickets overnight earlier this month.
"I just want to legally park in front of my home," she said. "Police told me I can continue to park there, but I will continue to get tickets."
She said she parked on the street in front of Construction Specialties.
Mayor Richard Smith told Phillips that police apprised him that her car was considered illegally parked in that location.
"We can dismiss the one ticket," he said.
Otherwise, the matter is a police issue, he added.
Phillips said she will take up the matter with police.
In personnel matters, council appointed Scott T. Williams to serve as solicitor for the zoning hearing board at a rate of $130 per hour.
Council also appointed Jeff Berger to fill a vacancy on the water authority. Berger formerly served on the water authority and as a member of borough council.
In other matters, council:
• Approved a proposal from Lycoming Digital Copier for copying services on an as-needed basis.
• Approved Ron's General Cleaning for rug cleaning.
• Met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel issues.
