Ricketts Glen State Park reopened its Falls Trail for the 2023 season ahead of the holiday weekend.
"There is still a section of trail that will be closed for hazard mitigation and repairs," a social media post by park staff said. "The closure for repairs to an unstable rock ledge remains in place to all hikers on the Glen Leigh side of the system from F.L. Ricketts Falls to Ozone Falls."
The post notes the closure keeps two waterfalls inaccessible and that a full loop of the system is not possible until the repairs are completed. Hikers will have to
backtrack at some point during their hikes to get back to where they started.
"Please take the time to look at a map at the trailhead or take one with you on your hike and have a plan to work around the closure," the post said. "The park is working hard with external partners regarding the issue with the rock ledge causing the closure. Unfortunately, due to its remote location and additional ice challenges that winter poses here, it was not possible to physically work on the hazard mitigation in the winter months."
Park staff remind hikers to wear proper footwear -- not sneakers, Crocs or flip flops -- and to take water with them.
