The South Williamsport Area School Board passed a resolution to hold a public hearing next month to consider the district buildings construction project.
The hearing, set for 6 p.m. Monday, May 1, will allow the public to ask questions about the $19.25 million plan to upgrade schools.
Financing and other issues will be discussed during the hearing required by the Pennsylvania School Code of 1949.
Written testimony or comments can be submitted by 4 p.m. April 27 to Dr. Eric Briggs, Superintendent of Schools, 515 Central Ave., South Williamsport, PA 17702.
Although the board normally holds meetings in the high school library, the site of the hearing may be held at another location in the district to accommodate a large gathering of attendees.
In other matters, the board approved a bid of $16,825 from Steinbacher Enterprises for the demolition of a house at 421 Mountain Ave.
Without the parking lot addition, the cost is about $5,000 less than the originally proposed figure.
The board approved a change order to a contract with Turnkey Electrical, Inc. for a generator.
The revised agreement, calling for "a different generator with a better lead time for delivery," results in a savings of $108,123 to the district, bringing the cost to $194,747.
The board heard a presentation from Mary Kay Bukeavich, of Nutrition Inc., to offer free meals for all students in the district.
Under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), the district would be reimbursed through a formula that considers the number of students who otherwise qualify for free breakfasts and lunches.
Briggs advised the board that the deadline to apply for funding through the Community Oriented Police Services grant is May 17. COPS is a program that provides funding to states, public agencies, and schools to improve security.
The board approved creation of new policies for participation in co-curricular activities and academic courses by home education students and in career and technical education programs by home education students.
In personnel matters, the board approved:
• Shelby Akers as a classroom monitor for the remainder of the school year.
• Brianna Strickland as a long-term substitute for third grade from mid-April till the end of the school year.
• Sharon Andrade as a bus driver.
The board met in executive session following the meeting for contract negotiations.
