County employees will soon be able to set aside money for a child or grandchild's post-secondary education with the approval by the Lycoming County commissioners of a resolution for the county to participate in a college and career savings program.
"This is an excellent opportunity for the parent to save for your child's education," said commissioner Scott Metzger.
"We know how important education is in the scheme of life and you know how expensive schools are," he said.
The program is offered through the state's Treasury Department and allows parents or grandparents to have money deducted from their payroll to be used for relatives attending colleges, universities, technical and trade schools as well as qualified apprenticeships.
There is no cost to the county to participate in the program.
The program will be offered to employees during an open enrollment process, according to Jessica Segraves, human services director.
Under personnel items, the commissioners approved hiring the following people at the pay rate listed: Eric Wolfgang, part-time replacement deputy sheriff, $19.27 per hour; Jessica Mazante, full-time replacement deputy sheriff, $21 per hour; and Dorcas Carr, full-time replacement custodial work in facilities management, $14.48 per hour.
In other business, the commissioners approved: a medication assisted treatment services agreement with the West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission and River Valley Health and Dental Center to provide care for inmates in the county prison who are on a medication assisted treatment program in the community prior to coming to jail; a cooperative agreement with UPMC Muncy relating to the $5 million grant they had received for their expansion project; the purchase of carpet tiles for the Sheriff's Office from Shaw Industries Inc. at a cost of $14,176; an agreement with Monitronics International Inc., for $6,992; a change order with Elijah Inc. in the amount of $1,905 for a utility elevation project; an amendment to an agreement with the Federal Bureau of Prisons to provide electricity, extending it three months; the purchase of a cylinder replacement for transfer trailer at Resource Management Services from Spector Manufacturing Inc., at a cost of $15,500; the purchase of an Altoz rough cut mower from Buffalo Valley Repair Inc. for $20,511; an agreement with Community Solutions Inc. for in-home multi-disciplinary therapy at $85 per diem; and an amendment to an agreement with ATC Group Services dba BCM Engineers to extend the contract for the Riverwalk Extension project.
The next commissioners' meeting will be at 10 a.m. May 25 at the commissioners board room, first floor Executive Plaza, 330 Pine St.
