Hughesville Borough officials were urged this week to support efforts to launch a community garden.
Candy Nearhoof, of Friends Church, Hughesville, told borough council that produce grown in the garden would help feed many residents and families who don't always have enough to eat.
"I feel the community garden would be helpful," she said.
Borough officials have discussed the possibility of locating a garden at different sites in the community, including behind the municipal building.
Nearhoof said she has taken up the issue with Mayor Rick Smith and with East Lycoming School District officials.
Council President Andrew Mook said he will further discuss the matter with the mayor.
A borough resident raised concerns about the financial burden many property owners face with replacing their sidewalks.
He suggested that council consider a financing plan that would help those residents.
He said he can afford replacing or fixing his own sidewalks, but many other people cannot.
"They don't have it (money). It's going to put them under," he said.
Mook said, "We are handling it on a case-by-case basis."
Borough solicitor Brandon Griest advised council that a public hearing will be required to consider a business owner's request for the borough to vacate an alley.
Michael Hacker, of McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., is requesting he take over the alley behind his business to allow him to expand his operations.
It was reported to council that street sweeping has been completed and brush pickup is under way.
Council discussed replacing several computers used by borough and water and sewer authority employees.
Police Chief Rod Smith reported 64 incidents in the borough in April.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel issues.
The next council meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, May 22.
