Real estate taxes can be expected to increase for South Williamsport Area School District property owners in the coming year, but perhaps not as high as the 1.51 millage increase previously proposed.
Instead, the school board will be presented with a $20 million spending plan later this month that raises taxes by just 0.25 mills.
Business manager Jamie Mowery reported to school directors at their recent meeting that tweaks made to the budget are being considered to bring some relief to taxpayers.
A 0.25 millage increase would mean an additional $25 in real estate taxes in the coming year for properties with an assessed value of $100,000.
Next year's budget would show a deficit of $71,000.
In January, the board approved a proposed budget that included a 1.51-mill increase, a figure that would exceed the Act 1 index.
With the amount of money coming to the district from the state still unknown, the budget remains a work in progress, according to Mowery.
"Earned income revenue is very unpredictable," she added.
The board is expected to pass a final budget at its May 22 meeting.
School districts are mandated to pass spending plans by June 30.
