Today farm to bring agriculture, education, entertainment venue to Muncy

April Line perhaps put it best in summing up plans for Today Farm, an agricultural, business and entertainment venue opening outside Muncy.

“We’ve got a lot of ideas,” she said.

Area residents will get their first look at Today Farm when it holds a grand opening noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at 215 Shady Lane, Muncy, the former longtime site of the Styer Farm.

Line, Today Farm manager, talked about the innovative business and farming practices being introduced.

Line has long been employed by Susquehanna Mills Co., which makes culinary oils from sunflower and canola seeds.

She is working for Josh Leidecker, Today Farm owner, to grow oilseed crops.

“We will sell canola oil to colleges and private consumers,” she said.

But that’s not all.

In addition to oilseed crops, the farm will grow vegetables and have a grazing site for animals.

A big part of the operation will be the farm store for sales of a wide range of Pennsylvania-made food and products.

Standing along a dirt road bisecting the large swath of acreage near UPMC Muncy, Line said, “We’ve done a lot of cleaning up. These fields have all been recently seeded.”

She pointed to a nearby pond that she hopes to include as part of walking tours and perhaps entertainment.

It’s the educational and entertainment aspect of Today Farm that are part of the vision.

Each Saturday will feature a farmer’s market featuring locally made goods including meats, cheeses and sweets.

Having formed an alliance with Bullfrog Brewery, the farm store will serve beer and wine where visitors can partake of beverages and special events.

For just $1 per year, a membership grants a person news of bands and events exclusive access to merchandise.

“One of the ways to make farming sustainable is to provide entertainment,” she said. “We are going to have music and vendors on various occasions.”

Overall, Line referred to the launch of Today Farm as “a pretty big undertaking.”

Line stressed the regenerative farm practices that she and Leidecker support including crop rotation for increasing yields and improving the soil.

Teaching the public about agriculture and food and best practices for sustainable food supplies while connecting to the community will be a big goal of this working farm.

The name of Today Farm is derived from Tom and Daisy Styer, who ran the Styer farm for more than 50 years.

The grand opening will launch Today Farm and its vision for local agriculture and business.

“Right now, I’m too busy to be excited,” Line said. “I’m looking forward to the grand opening.”
