The estate of a man killed when his motorized wheelchair was struck and dragged in downtown Williamsport in 2019 has agreed to settle a wrongful death suit for $265,000.
Lycoming County Judge Eric R. Linhardt was asked by the two executors of the estate of John C. Yaroz II, who was age 66 when he was killed in October of that year, to approve the settlement of the suit against the driver and the city of Williamsport.
The settlement was reached with neither of the defendants admitting any liability, according to PennLive.com.
The investigation into the traffic accident that claimed Yaroz's life indicated he was killed by a sport utility vehicle while riding his motorized wheelchair at West Fourth and William streets on that afternoon.
Then-city Police Chief Damon Hagan spoke on behalf of the city, according to Sun-Gazette records.
A year later, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed by the executors of the estate of a man whose motorized wheelchair was struck and dragged.
The suit blamed the city of Williamsport and Tyrone Dunn, the driver of the vehicle that struck the wheelchair.
The city was accused of negligence for not maintaining a walk-don't walk signal at West Fourth and William streets in proper working order.
A police report of the accident confirms the malfunction which was since repaired by streets and parks department employees, according to PennLive and Sun-Gazette reporting.
