4-H members, families prepare for county fair

The animal barns at the fairgrounds in Hughesville are buzzing with activity as 4-H Club members and families gather to prepare for the 152nd Lycoming County Fair, which opens on Wednesday and runs through July 22.
The sounds of shovels and rakes scraping the ground competed with hammers persuading the new steel goat pens into place by volunteers. Other future farmers worked to make final entries in their "project books” before a review by representatives from Penn State Extension. Still others waited patiently in line for ID badges that will get them through the gate of their home away from home.
Beginning Friday, the northeast corner of the fairgrounds will house sheep, swine, goats, rabbits and the young people who have raised them. Cattle are scheduled to arrive by the end of the weekend. Showing the animals begins Saturday with rabbits and cavies at 9 a.m.and continues throughout the Fair. In spite of the hard work and effort of these agrarians, there is still time to relax and play a little with a Family Fun Night featuring a lamb and calf dressing contest at 7:30 p.m. on July 20.
Other features of the fair include horticulture, art and baked goods exhibits along with rides on the midway, food vendors and commercial displays. The grandstand will host tractor pulls, live entertainment and the popular demolition derbies. The Fair offers free admission on Wednesday with free harness racing starting at 4 p.m.
