Lycoming County planners talk Lawshee Run project funding

By Mike Reuther 2 min read

An update on the Lawshee Run project in Jersey Shore highlighted action at the July meeting of the Lycoming County Planning Commission.

Shannon Rossman, executive director, noted that grant funding is needed to move the project forward.

"We will look at whatever funding sources we can," she said.

County commissioners recently approved $258,129 in federal dollars to cover preliminary engineering work.

But that only covers a small amount of the total project cost estimated at anywhere from $7 million to $9 million.

"We won't get a $7 million grant," Rossman said.

However, it was noted that any one of different grant funding sources could be available.

Securing a grant through a partnership with Tioga and Clinton counties, which are included in the planned expansion of the Pine Creek Rail Trail, was noted as a possibility.

Located beneath heavily traveled Allegheny Street, the Lawshee Run culvert is at risk of collapse and has long been targeted for much-needed upgrades.

Although some work has been done, additional improvements are needed.

Officials noted that Lawshee Run is a small stream but is known to back up during high-water storm events and floods, impacting area businesses and properties and can result in the closure of Allegheny Street, a main thoroughfare of Jersey Shore.

"If you get a quick storm, the higher the velocity, the more damage done," Rossman said.

In other matters, planners recommended approval for a multi-lot subdivision plan in Pine Township. The parcels owned by Roger Jarrett are located off Route 287 near Oregon Hill.
