Ashkar Elementary opening as planned for new school year

HUGHESVILLE-Ashkar Elementary School will be opening for classes this Thursday as had been previously scheduled, following test results revealing that indicate sufficient reduction in mold so that no further remediation is required, according to a statement from Dr. Mark Stamm, superintendent at the East Lycoming School District. All other student activities at the school will resume on Wednesday.
The school had been closed since last week when air quality testing showed positive results for mold spores at levels requiring remediation. A contractor specializing in mold remediation had been called in and the affected areas were sealed and cleaned. The work was completed last Friday through Sunday and followed by retesting. Leaks in the roof at the building prompted the initial air quality testing.
"I am aware there have been historical challenges with air quality management at Ashkar and other buildings. We are working towards a permanent solution not only in the buildings but with groundwater around the buildings. This permanent solution will take time to do correctly," Stamm said in a letter to staff and district families.
"Regardless, there remains a need now to ensure ongoing air quality is maintained. In light of this, the district ordered portable hepa air scrubbers that will be placed throughout Ashkar hallways and classrooms. These will take about three weeks to arrive. Until then the district is renting similar units from a local supplier," he continued.
"Moving forward, air quality and humidity levels will be monitored at regular intervals and appropriate action taken when necessary," Stamm said.
All schools in the district will be opening for the 2023-24 school year this Thursday.
"Thank you for your patience as we worked to address this issue quickly and appropriately. I am looking forward to the start of school this week and thankful that all students will be starting together," Stamm added.
