Montoursville approves sub superintendent for school district

By Mike Reuther 2 min read

The Montoursville Area School Board approved a substitute district superintendent and the hiring of a school counselor during its August meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Dan Taormina will serve as the substitute superintendent, retroactive to July 3, until a replacement is found for the position.

Superintendent Christina Bason is retiring from the district's top job in late September. The board has not indicated when a permanent replacement will be found.

Sharon Meyer, of Upper Fairfield Township, advised the board not to retain the assistant superintendent position if Taormina is given the job of superintendent.

Instead, she said, someone needs to be hired for a curriculum coordinator position.

The board approved the hiring of Mallee

Hornberger as a school guidance counselor for the 2023-2024 school year at an annual salary of $55,184.

Hornberger, who recently earned a master's degree, indicated she is excited to be joining the district.

"I have a lot of ideas," she said.

In other personnel action, the board approved the hirings of Matthew Fortin as a paraprofessional at $13 per hour, Daniel Ayers for building security at $11.50 per hour, and Garret Kutches for the after-school detention position at $12 per hour.

The following people were approved for coaching positions: Corey Twigg, assistant golf, $1,500 stipend; Jacob Bower, assistant girls' basketball, $3,200 stipend; and Eric Wise, volunteer golf coach.

The board approved the following resignations:

Lisa Brown, custodian.

Erin Turner, Wendy Fogelman and Christina Eavenson, paraprofessionals.

Richard Matlack and Glenn Kepner, event staff.

Liza Temple, secretary.

Taormina noted that the district needs to fill vacancies for paraprofessionals.

The board approved on first and second readings a policy covering the prohibition of pornographic materials in the district.

The purpose of the policy is to provide instructional and evaluative materials to implement and support the district's and the schools' educational goals and academic standards.

The superintendent will be ultimately held accountable for ensuring adherence to the policy.

The board approved a three-year agreement at $10,196 annually with Atlas for curriculum mapping software.

A one-year contract with Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board for the student assistance program was approved.

The board met in executive session prior to the regular meeting to consider legal matters and following the meeting for personnel issues.

The next school board meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12.
