City of Williamsport is bringing internet service to Newberry Park for surveillance cameras

Surveillance cameras will monitor happenings at Newberry Park, also known as Preziosi Park after former Mayor Phil Preziosi, in Williamsport's west end.
City Council recently authorized a resolution to purchase internet service through River Valley Internet for the surveillance cameras at the park.
River Valley Internet is offering to install equipment and provide internet service to the park for camera surveillance, said Kris Black, city information technology (IT) officer.
Council approved the contract with River Valley Internet with an install fee of $150 and a recurring monthly charge of $70 per month. The funds will be taken from the IT Contracted Services, city officials said.
The surveillance is expected to assist public safety personnel such as police and Bureau of Codes. It also is meant to provide more comfort to neighbors in the area.
It is a continuation of the promise by Mayor Derek Slaughter to ensure public safety remains a top priority for the administration.
This is similar to what has occurred at Shaw Place Park in the east end, Black said.
Councilwoman Liz Miele noted how it is a better way to "keep an eye" on what is going on in the parks.
Shaw Place has wifi capabilities but Newberry does not, Black said. He noted he does not have a place in which to install wifi capabilities without interference from other technology. Shaw Place is manned over the summer months with the Splash Pad and Newberry is not, he said.
