LAIRDSVILLE -- Just two days before Thanksgiving, a man and a woman, along with their 11-year-old granddaughter, lost their home to a fire early Tuesday morning on Lakeside Drive, according to Lairdsville Fire Chief William Gordner.
"There was heavy fire coming from the rear of the structure as well as heavy smoke from the roof," Hughesville Fire Chief Dan Dorman, the first on the scene, said. The fire was at 211 Lakeside Drive, a mobile home that sat on a foundation with additions to it a little more than a mile from Beaver Lake in Penn Township, Dorman said.
The fire broke out about 2:20 a.m. Everyone was already out of the home when firefighters arrived, Gordner said.
The family, whose name was not
released, was awakened by the smell of smoke, and they saw that the exterior wall to their chimney was on fire, Dorman said. In order to reach the property, firefighters had to stretch at least 800 feet of hose down a lengthy driveway, he added.
Donning self-contained apparatus, rotating teams of firefighters stretched hoses through the front door, but despite their intense efforts, the property was a total loss, Gordner and Dorman said. The couple had no fire insurance.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was providing emergency assistance to the family, Dorman said. The fire was brought under control in about an hour, Gordner said.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, but there was nothing suspicious about it, Gordner said.
Besides Lairdsville and Hughesville, volunteer firefighters from Muncy Valley, Picture Rocks, Muncy Area, Pennsdale and Montoursville responded to the blaze. Firemen left the scene about 5:30 a.m.
Firemen from Warrior Run Area stood by at the Hughesville firehouse with one piece of apparatus while DuBoistown firemen brought a fire truck to standby at Pennsdale's station in the event that another fire emergency occurred in the region.
