Hughesville Borough Council recently accepted the resignation of a police officer and approved the hiring of a part-time public works department employee.
Xavier Becker resigned as a part-time police officer after being employed by the borough for nearly a year.
No action was taken to fill the position.
Council agreed to hire Glen Barto, of Hughesville, at $16.50 per hour as a part-time public works employee.
He is expected to work on an as-needed basis.
Council discussed the possibility of adding more people to the department.
Council was asked by a Second Street resident for an extension for fixing sidewalks at her property.
She explained that she simply can't afford to have the work done at this time.
A borough ordinance mandates property owners to upgrade or replace sidewalks in need of repair.
Council President Andrew Mook said the borough is trying to secure a Safe Haven to School grant for replacing sidewalks in areas of the borough including her street.
In the meantime, they will take up her request for consideration.
Council voted to purchase radios for the police department at a cost of $52,014. The borough will use American Rescue Plan Act funding to cover most of the cost.
Council approved a $49,000 payment to HRI for paving of Sixth Street and an alley.
The borough will pay an additional $13,000 next year for the work, which represents the outstanding costs.
Council approved Richard Lowe, of Muncy, for the borough's auditing services. Depending on services rendered, the cost will range between $5,700 and $6,200.
Mayor Richard Smith advised council to consider repair work at Fifth and Academy streets.
The intersection is reportedly riddled with potholes.
Meeting dates for 2024 were set.
Council will once again meet the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m. in the municipal building.
The exceptions will be in January and in May.
Council will meet Tuesday, Jan. 2 to hold its reorganization meeting. In May, council will meet on just the thirteenth of the month.
It was noted that community-wide leaves pickup is expected to begin this week.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel and legal matters.
