The spirit of giving was alive and well as the Salvation Army picked up a large donation of canned goods from Jackson Primary School Tuesday morning.
The food drive was organized by the Jackson Culture and Community Club.
"The club is a group of third graders that are nominated by their teachers and they help with various projects that we have going on," said Assistant Principal Denise Clark. "They were tasked with counting the cans and making sure they were organized."
"The goal is to instill in the kiddos the joy of giving, especially this time of the year," Principal John Fetterman said. "So, this is an annual project that's been held by the school district to encourage the children to bring in cans and to to develop the love of giving to others and to help other people out in the process."
The goal of the project was to accumulate 1,000 cans, which Fetterman said was "surpassed."
"You can just feel the energy and see the energy among these kids and their love of giving this holiday season, which I think is a great thing to have to inspire the entire community," said Laura Templeton, public relations and resource development director for the Williamsport Salvation Army Corps. "They take such joy and delight in it. They look at each can and it's not just 'I'm giving,' they're realizing 'oh, I like these. And they're really realizing all the things that they are giving and what it means to them, and then I'm sure they realize what it will mean to somebody who receives it."
