In response to a need expressed by their patrons, the James V. Library is refurbishing a room in the Welch Wing to provide a private space for breastfeeding and chestfeeding moms.
"We're going to take the prep kitchen in the Welch Wing that's very underutilized," said Amy Resh, executive director, at this month's Board of Trustees meeting recently.
Resh said her staff said that the space had been used a few months ago and otherwise was basically used for storage.
"There's got to be better use for that space. We were kind of brainstorming when we got some of the feedback from moms and caregivers," Resh said
"So, we're going to be revitalizing the space and making it a private lactation and pumping room for parents," she added.
In preparation, the room, which is equipped with a sink, is being cleaned so that it can be opened by the end of the month.
"We have a chair we're putting in there and we'll bring down a rug and some little play things so that if parents have multiple children, those little ones can be in there with them," she said.
The library already has a very "robust" Baby Cafe program for expecting, new or experienced mothers and caregivers, offered in partnership with UPMC, Resh noted. An average of anywhere from 10 to 25
participants attends the Cafe which is held twice a month. A board certified Lactation Consultant is available at the meetings to answer questions and provide support.
"Due to this successful partnership with Williamsport UPMC and the Lycoming Clinton Breastfeeding Coalition, the library is an official breastfeeding family-friendly location," Resh said.
Referring to the plan to have a separate space for breastfeeding, Resh said, "We talked to our participants at the Cafe and they're very excited."
During the board's meeting, Resh said that the library is already planning events for the Summer Learning Program, which this year is called "Adventure Begins at the Library." The program will kick off June 15.
"We're starting the adventure at the library and we're taking it out into the community. We want to highlight how fantastic Lycoming County is and all the great things there are to do right here," Resh said.
She detailed some of the events that she and her staff have been brainstorming for the program, utilizing various groups and sites in the area for activities.
"It's a great way to highlight that there are so many awesome things here in our community," she said.
