The powdery white ice cold snow will be replaced in late spring and summer by chalk lines at two Little League fields in Brandon Park in the City of Williamsport.
This will be the first time in over a decade Little Leaguers on baseball and softball teams will be playing in the city limits.
That is how Ron Diemer, a spokesman for Williamsport Area Little League, described to City Council the impending games as the council approved a resolution authorizing execution of a lease agreement between WALL and the city.
Mayor Derek Slaughter observed how council appropriated funds using American Rescue Plan fund for the restoration of the ballfields to make them playable again after several years of them not being in that condition.
Councilman Jon Mackey advocated for the full use of recreation directed funds in the amount of $800,000 as the ballfields came in under budget.
He noted after Diemer addressed some issues with electric and securing the facilities dugouts to assure the city spends the $800,000 it committed to on the ballfields.
Diemer said the League anticipated a grand reopening later this year and all attending the meeting expressed excitement to see kids playing baseball on the reconditioned fields later this year.
He saluted the efforts of Councilman Jon Mackey, along with others, but singled out Mackey for his strong advocacy for use of recreational-eligible ARPA funding for the park's facilities.
The reintroduction of the Little League games, along with the efforts by Lycoming College, including the $2.5 million investment into its separate facility at the park, is expected to not only be a citywide and regional attraction but is expected to generate more business and improve the local economy for stores, restaurants and hotels.
