The Montoursville Area School Board gave the go ahead for work to remedy water issues at the high school wrestling room and acted on personnel and other issues during its recent work session.
The board approved a quote of $15,403 from Baker's Waterproofing, of Shamokin Dam, for the wrestling room project.
The work will amount to installation of a pump system, basement gutter and wall seal and will get underway following the 2023-24 wrestling season.
In personnel matters, school directors approved the retirements of elementary teacher Diane Boyle and physical education teacher Richard Marriott effective June 30.
Boyle has been employed by the district for 22 years and Marriott for 31 years.
District Superintendent Daniel Taormina said the two will be missed.
"I'm sad to see both go," Board Director Sharon Meyer said.
The board approved the resignation of Charles Goodman from the support staff.
Amy Case was approved as a substitute art teacher.
After some discussion, the board approved the school calendar for the 2024-25 school year.
Meyer questioned the "staggered" start to the school year, noting that students will not have classes five days a week through early September.
The first day of school is set for Thursday, Aug. 22.
Students will have no school Friday, Aug. 30, and Monday, Sept. 2 which is Labor Day.
"The feedback we get from staff is they like the staggered start," Taormina said.
Meyer also questioned the long Thanksgiving break with students out of school from Monday, Nov. 25, to Monday, Dec. 2.
The school calendar includes one snow makeup day.
The last day of school for students is scheduled for June 5, 2025.
The board approved a $1,228 grant for the Montoursville Environmental Club's beekeeping project for 2024.
The group applied for the Environmental Education Mini-Grant through the Lycoming County Conservation District.
Taormina reported to the board that he hopes to have in place a curriculum coordinator by the start of the next school year.
He suggested the board take up the issue in a coming meeting and consider advertising for someone to fill the position.
The next board meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13 at the high school.
