Two weeks after WBRE/WYOU reported on a rash of mysterious notes popping up in the eastern part of the state, the first note to appear in the area was reported to police over the weekend.
On Dec. 26, a note found in a box of Lucky Charm's Smores cereal by Luzerne County resident Joe Miller, of Sugarloaf Township, was brought to their attention.
"I poured it out in my bowl and out came this paper that was all folded up," Miller said, according to WBRE/WYOU.
"I was devastated. I still have the box here. Probably not going to eat it. I don't know what's inside the cereal or was this note laced with anything," Miller explained, WBRE/WYOU said.
And, now Lycoming Regional Police are investigating a note found by a Jersey Shore man inside a box of eye drops.
"Anytime you have any type of tampering with products, that obviously gives the consumer some issues and some pause as well as the police department," said Captain Kriner, according to WBRE/WYOU, stressing that while the Food and Drug Administration is the agency leading the investigation, it is always important for residents to report these occurrences to local authorities.
"Obviously, it's helpful. You can call your local police department and make a report, but the most important thing is to know if there's something foreign in the product, they should not use it, and should probably return it to the retail outlet they purchased it from," Kriner added.
The note discovered in Jersey Shore follows on the heels of one found in a box of chocolate bars by a Lock Haven resident this weekend.
The notes are described by WBRE/WYOU as containing "a mash-up of words and references to current events and conspiracy theories."
"The mystery notes are being found in all types of products from a variety of stores," WBRE/WYOU said.
Congressmen Dan Meuser, R-Dallas, and Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, told WBRE/WYOU that they've been in contact with federal agencies, including the FDA and FBI.
"We're definitely going to stay on top of this. If it's concerning to our constituents, which it clearly is, it's concerning to us," Meuser told WBRE/WYOU. "So, we are going to stay in touch with our contacts at the FBI and the FDA. Everything that we can find out that we can share we will."
"There's been no indications of sickness," Cartwright said, "but you don't want to take any chances and we want to find out who is doing this. It's obviously somebody's idea of a weird joke but you don't want to let it get any further than that."
