Hughesville Borough Council filled a vacancy on its board and considered other matters during its recent meeting.
Danielle Murray was appointed to fill the vacant council seat representing the borough's First Ward.
No resident had run for the seat in the November election.
Following her appointment, Murray was sworn in by Mayor Richard Smith as a council member.
In other matters, borough officials briefly discussed snow removal and upkeep of properties.
Smith noted that the sidewalk in front of the Main Street convenience store was among those not cleared of snow following the Jan. 16 storm.
"There are a lot of sidewalks that never get done," Council President Andrew Mook said.
The winter storm dropped several inches of snow on the borough. More snow fell later in the week.
Smith reported to council that at least one abandoned property poses an eyesore in the downtown.
The boarded-up storefront, he said, "just looks horrible on Main Street."
Mook expressed dismay at the accumulation of junk at one other borough property.
"It's just getting worse now," he said.
Borough Solicitor Scott Williams reported to
council that he has attempted to contact two property owners who live along Hunsinger Alley.
The borough agreed to vacate the alley and allow the residents to continue using it to travel back and forth to their homes. Williams noted the property owners have to sign off on the alley agreement.
Council voted to contribute $600 to River Valley Transit, a $75 increase from last year.
Council met in executive session following the regular meeting to consider legal issues.
The next meeting is set for 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at the municipal building, 147 S. Fifth St.
