Hughesville Borough will be putting property owners on notice who fail to upgrade or replace deteriorating sidewalks at their residences or businesses.
Borough council at its recent meeting agreed to send letters out to those whose sidewalks remain out of compliance.
The four-year sidewalk improvement plan rolled out in 2023 targets specific areas of the community in annual phases.
"We will start getting letters together and send them out," Council President Andrew Mook said.
Borough officials did not disclose how many property owners are faced with sidewalk issues.
It was noted that some completed needed sidewalk work in 2023.
Councilman Daniel Cale said a backlog of sidewalk work will occur if too many property owners delay plans to follow through with repairs or upgrades.
"We waited four years to enforce it. Everyone knew it was coming," Councilman Jerry Daugherty said.
He suggested that a deadline be set for property owners who could otherwise face fines of between $100 and $1,000. So far, no penalties have been assessed.
In other matters, a Second Street resident asked council to consider erecting 25 mph speed-limit signs in his neighborhood and in other parts of the borough to slow down traffic.
Borough officials noted that the speed limit is 25 mph on all interior streets of Hughesville and in areas of the community otherwise not posted.
Mook said council could investigate the matter.
Police Chief Rod Smith reported his department had 73 incidents during the month of January.
He said they included many parking tickets issued to property owners who failed to remove snow.
Council voted to make an annual donation of $300 to the SPCA and agreed to finalize the Hunsinger Alley agreement.
Council met in executive session following the meeting to consider legal issues.
The next council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 26 at the municipal building.
