Two federal lawmakers urged Republicans to be more aware of mail-in ballots, one saying the election to take back the White House in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania may be as narrow as 35,000 votes.
Both U.S. Reps. Glenn "GT" Thompson, R-Howard, and Dan Meuser, R-Dallas, warned this election could mean losing the chance to reverse national security and foreign policy blunders in the administration led by President Joe Biden.
"We've got a lot of work to do, and our future starts right here in this election," said Thompson to many supporters at the Lincoln Day dinner held at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport Saturday night.
The dinner is the largest of fundraisers for the Lycoming County Republican Committee.
"It is time to take back the White House," Thompson said, referring to illegal crossings at the southern border, especially under policy by Biden who reversed that of former President Donald J. Trump.
"We had a partner in Donald Trump for four years. We worked together with Trump and, very frankly, did some great things," Thompson said.
He gave a second endorsement to U.S. Senate contender Dave McCormick, who he considered as a friend, who "I was proud to support last time around and he's going to be our next U.S. senator."
Thompson said a goal in this election was to fire Chuck Schumer as the Senate Majority Leader.
Thompson thanked and acknowledged committee GOP chairman Don Peters for what he does.
U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Dallas, referred to the images on stage of Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and how they led the nation in times when unification and prayer were needed. How Washington led the young nation that would become a superpower and Lincoln led in the most difficult of circumstances, during the Civil War.
"We are going to fight, and we are also going to keep the faith," Meuser said.
"I come here from Washington and certainly love serving the district, but I do not have a good report for you from Washington," he said, reiterating what Thompson said. "Our national security is more than just a challenge. It is trouble – our border is an absolute catastrophe.
"The other onslaught on America is on our energy, our businesses and our small business," he said.
"On our fiscal stability because of spending."
Meuser who has visited the southern border described it as a disaster created by failed border policy.
He said with illegal crossovers comes the drug cartels, the coyotes who funnel these individuals into the country for money caring nothing for their health and welfare and the resulting explosive drug crises, including fentanyl, much of it manufactured in China.
"Keep this in mind -- it's always darkest before the dawn. Lincoln experienced it, Washington experienced it, and we are experiencing it."
"2024 is our opportunity to correct this, to rise up," Meuser said.
"The way we're going to do it is through policy, because our policy works and there's doesn't."
Meuser called on those in the audience to be sure to cast their votes for Stacy Garrity for state treasurer, for Timothy L. DeFoor, auditor general for Dave Sunday, attorney general and McCormick, U.S. Senate.
These candidates will be working for a greater Pennsylvania to make Pennsylvania as great as it should be, he said.
"Not only do we have to vote but we have to make sure that everybody that can vote gets a ballot application or gets to the polls," Meuser said.
"This isn't about saying you know 'get five of your friends and go to the polls' this is serious folks. "We can win if we push the envelope on, literally, mail-in ballots.
We need to pick up 3, 4, maybe 5% on the mail-in side.
The state could come down to 35,000 votes one way or the other."
"Tell me we can't do that. Tell me we can't make that a victory. With victory comes saving America for ourselves and our children," Meuser said.
