The Muncy school board, at its recent monthly meeting, discussed potential expansion plans for the Lycoming Career and Technology Center with some members expressing financial concerns about a possible building project.
Six area school districts including Muncy send students for training to the Lyco CTC located at the East Lycoming School District campus.
The CTC board is exploring options for the school as part of a feasibility study, according to Nathan Minium, CTC director.
"Our board has not made any decisions on construction," he told the Sun-Gazette.
However, Muncy school directors said they'd like more information regarding any potential expansion project.
Kim Walker made it clear where he stood on the issue.
"East Lycoming will build it and fund it and lease it to other school districts," he said. "That's the only way anything should move forward."
He also questioned the need for another building, noting that some of the CTC educational programs offered are not growing.
Minium said overall enrollment is increasing.
"We are maximizing our space," he said.
The school has considered adding other training programs such as diesel mechanics and welding, he added.
At least four of the six participating school districts would have to approve any building plan for construction to move forward.
School director David Edkin said he felt financial aspects of any plan need to be addressed.
Minium noted that a building project would have to be coordinated with East Lycoming which has been engaged in its own construction and improvement plans in the district.
In personnel matters, the board approved the hirings of Joanna Lucas and Chloe Skaluba as substitute custodians at $11 per hour and Mark Shaheen as food service substitute at $11 per hour.
The board voted to hire the following personnel as coaches for the spring sports season:
• Travis Sheleman, first assistant, baseball.
• Tim King, second assistant, baseball.
• Robert Koslop, first assistant, softball.
• Jonathan Weaver, second assistant, softball.
• Charity Good, junior high hockey volunteer.
The board approved policies on final reading for parent and family engagement and bullying/cyberbullying.
The 2024-2025 BLaST IU 17 operations budget was approved.
The board met in executive session following the meeting to consider personnel and legal issues.
