Two W’sport men killed in violent early-morning crash

Two Williamsport men were identified as those who were killed in a violent crash on Washington Boulevard early Friday, the Lycoming County coroner’s office said.

Tyree Green, 32, and his passenger Levar Ballard, 34, were pronounced dead by Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling’s office personnel at the scene at 2:30 a.m.

Green, the driver of the 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis that crashed at a high rate of speed on Washington Boulevard in front of the Turkey Hill, and Ballard were both unrestrained and died on impact from multiple blunt force trauma, according to the coroner’s report.

The crash occurred about 12:50 a.m. just east of Railway Street, state police said.

Both men were trying to elude police, state police said.

Using a radar device, state troopers were conducting “speed enforcement” on Interstate 180 near the Faxon interchange when a car passed them at a high rate of speed, Trooper Lauren Lesher said.

“The troopers activated their emergency lights and attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the speeding vehicle,” Lesher said.

Green failed to stop and quickly exited the interstate, she said.

“The troopers continued in the same direction of travel as the speeding vehicle,” and came upon the crash moments after it happened, Lesher said.

After getting off the interstate, Green traveled approximately a mile before losing control of the 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis while negotiating a curve, Lesher said.

“The car went off the north side of the road and struck first a retaining wall and a tree before hitting several buildings,” Lesher said.

Once the two occupants were removed from the car, their bodies were taken to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport, Kiessling said.

“As per our regulations, all members involved (in this incident) have been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues,” Lesher said.

The investigation is being led by Cpl. Steven Dunkle, assigned to the Lamar barracks.

Williamsport Bureau of Fire and Susquehanna Regional EMS personnel assisted with extrication of the men from the wreckage.
