After much back and forth at the board's last meeting, Montoursville school directors this week approved the creation of a volleyball club for junior and senior high school girls.
School directors and parents of students interested in participating in volleyball expressed their support for the sport at the March 26 board meeting.
"It is a club for junior and senior high for the fall of 2024. The purpose is to develop skills and prepare for PHAC entry for the 2025 season," district Superintendent Dan Taormina said. "We will leave it up to the coach we hire to determine the specifics, including any type of competition, practices and startup equipment."
Last month, when faced with voting on the program, the estimated $70,000 startup costs emerged as a major sticking point with the board.
"The startup costs for this will not be $70,000 because it is not a full competitive program yet," Taormina said. "This allows us to build capacity within our budget to be able to sustain the annual costs of running the program and spread startup costs over two years."
