Right-of-way easement approvals bring riverwalk extension one step closer

Williamsport City Council has approved right-of-way agreements with Lycoming County on streets vital to the proposed extension of the Susquehanna Riverwalk trail to Susquehanna State Park.
These include easements for Rose, West Third and Elm streets and Berger Alley, according to the approval.
Gary Knarr, city zoning administrator, noted how council had in August 2023 approved the resolution for the trail extension from Maynard Street to the state park.
The trail will be extended to run behind Pennsylvania College of Technology, to near where the former Susquehanna Supply Co. had a building (a future sports complex), up Rose Street, crossing West Third Street and connecting to Berger Alley before heading behind the River Valley Transit facility, across the railroad tracks, around Elm Park and then over to Susquehanna State Park along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River.
There are other parcels that are involved in the extension of the trail, but they are privately owned, Knarr said.
"I am excited this has come to fruition," said Councilwoman Liz Miele, an avid walker and biker.
The pathway is expected to not only increase access for runners, pedestrians and bicyclists to the state park, but also set up further connectivity potential west toward places such as the Rails to Trails in the Jersey Shore area.
