Montgomery seeking grant for park improvement

By Matthew Courter 3 min read

The Montgomery Borough Council accepted a bid for a paving project to take place along Melvina and Piatt streets at its May meeting.

Big Rock Paving had the lowest bid at $48,468.

The project is expected to start this year, dependent on the paving with UGI, according to Borough Manager Donna Miller. The road will be closed during the project, during which time traffic will be rerouted.

In other financial matters, Borough Manager Donna Miller informed the council that she will be seeking a grant not to exceed $250,000 for the installation of handicapped bathrooms at the park through the DCED Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program; and that new double doors have been ordered for the concession stand, at the behest of Montgomery Little League, in the amount of $4,405; the council approved a fire department funding request in the amount of $5,000 for ambulance repairs; and the purchase of a mini excavator for all future projects. The total price is $7,965, which the borough and water authority will split, resulting in a cost of $3,982.50 each.

The resignation of Scott Freedle from the Water Authority was accepted by the council.

In community events, the annual carnival is ongoing through Saturday, when the parade will take place at 5 p.m.

Fire Cadet for 12 to 14 year-olds will be held July 27 and 28 in Watsontown, and July 25 to 28 for those 14 to 18 year-old, and will be split between Watsontown, Milton and Lewisburg.

Montgomery's Fire Department does not put on the event, but will have a truck assisting in the event, department representative Donald Gordner said.

President Pro-Temp Laurel Green announced that the River Fest will not be taking place this year.

11 volunteers participated in the borough's third annual litter cleanup, which netted 740 pounds of litter, Green said, noting that as an improvement over past years.

The community fireworks will be from 5 to 9 p.m. July 3, with the borough now accepting donations for the event, Green said. Financial donations can be made to the borough office.

Community cleanup week will begin Monday, Miller said, adding that all that is needed to take part is proof of borough residency.

The Montgomery Area Historical Society will be holding their stone church cemetery event from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, society member Faye Herb said.

The first hour will feature local musician Van Wagner, and will be followed by a cemetery staff discussion by cemetery staff detailing how they take care of the headstones and make repairs to them when necessary.

Entrance to the event will be at the FCC Prison grounds on Route 15.

The next council meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on June 11.
