Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission plans forum in Williamsport

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette The Krapf Gateway Center at Lycoming College serves as the official entrance to the college from the east end of the city.

Lycoming College in Williamsport will host a visit by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission as part of the commission’s statewide tour on building a “Beloved Community.”

“Such a community is a group of residents, usually within one geographic area, that work together across racial, gender and ethnic lines through the guiding principles of unity and love for humanity,” according to a news release.

The event is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. July 23 at the college’s Krapf Gateway Center, Trogner Presentation Room, One College Place.

This is expected to be a forum in which the commission hears and better understands the concerns of the community, according to Chad Dion Lassiter, commission executive director.

“It will also serve as an opportunity to better our Beloved Community, create relationships and partnerships with local leaders and organizations to help them solve controversial issues within communities,” Lassiter said, according to the news release.

The Beloved Community framework was created to “assist communities statewide to intentionally build a culture of peace, understanding and tolerance despite differences – within the context of an increasingly diverse and interconnected world,” the news release said.

Each listening session will include a presentation on the Beloved Community framework and an overview of the services and programs offered by the commission. Lassiter then will open it up for questions from the community.

Starting at $2.99/week.
