JERSEY SHORE -- Software which would have aided the district and the Education Foundation in fundraising was voted down by the Jersey Shore Area School Board. Cost of the Boomerang software was $3,003.
Board members voting against the purchase were concerned about the cost. Board President Michelle Stemler shared that she voted no because she felt the foundation should have taken on the cost for a year to see if the software was effective.
"I do actually believe that it is extremely beneficial and I think that it's something that is extremely beneficial. I think that it's something that is necessary in the future. For lack of a better word in my mind, I think it's just maybe bad timing to have to pay for something," she added.
The board is very cautious about the budget as they are in a 90-day cooling off period which may culminate in a decision to close Salladasburg Elementary School.
Comments from the public referenced the public hearing held last week where the overwhelming response from district residents was against closing the school. This meeting was no different.
Salladasburg mother Kristen Morse asked the board for more information.
"Many people, including a member of your board, ask for more conversations and information prior to the voting," Morse said. "I hope there will be more information."
"Right now it doesn't seem very clear and kind of a little wishy-washy. It would go a long way to show that you care about the connection and the community and just be forthcoming," Morse added.
Under personnel, the board approved hiring the following persons at the rates of pay listed: Donnie Mitcheltree, part time food service, $13.13 per hour; Andrew Bickel, full-time maintenance, $22.32 per hour; Allyson Cameron, Middle School Social Studies teach, $64,115 per year; Madelyn Matthews, Middle School learning support teacher, $62,553 per year; Blair Russo, Jersey Shore Elementary Special Education teacher, $70,278 per year; Matt Hensler and Brooke Menzen, new teacher mentors, $510 yearly stipend; and Jill Flook and Erica Wingo, mentors to new teachers who have already been inducted, $306 yearly stipend.
The board accepted resignations from Stacy Edkin, food service substitute; Aaron Kemnitz, 4th grade teacher at Jersey Shore Elementary; Shelby Fulkrod, 3rd grade teacher at Avis; Melissa Roger, 1st grade teacher at Salladasburg; and Savannah Green, band front staff.
A letter of retirement from Kimberly Myers, high school secretary, was also accepted by the board.
Other agenda items approved included: an agreement between Lycoming-Clinton CCCA and the district to purchase meals from July 1 through June 30, 2025; a letters of agreement between the district and the Lycoming-Clinton Joinder Board for services provided for the student assistance program and for school based outreach and student assistance services for the upcoming school year; a donation of plastic footballs with First Citizen Community Bank (FCCB) logo to be thrown out by cheerleaders at football games; and a donation to fund guardian helmet caps from Bear Country for the football team.
Proposed meal pricing for the upcoming school year was announced. They are: all breakfasts, free for students; $3 for adults for breakfast; high school and middle school lunch, $2.40; elementary lunch, $2.30; and adult lunch, $4.50.
All students who qualify for reduced meals will pay nothing for breakfast and lunch.
The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the District Administration Building, 175 A&P Drive.
