The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reminding residents of the region confronted by flooding damage of the Nov. 12 deadline for assistance and of issues residents may encounter with heating systems.

A news release from the agency noted the White House approved a major disaster declaration for Pennsylvania on Sept. 11. Individuals affected by Tropical Storm Debby on Aug. 9 or 10 in Lycoming, Potter, Tioga and Union counties can apply for assistance from FEMA. The Individual Assistance registration deadline is Nov. 12.

The last Disaster Recovery Center still operating in the region is at the Valley Christian Church, 146 Maple St., Westfield.

"The mission of FEMA is centered around helping people before, during and after disasters," FEMA media relations specialist Trey Paul said, according to a news release. "We are working as hard as we can for the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania who were hit by Tropical Storm Debby and will continue to assist them as long as we're needed."

The agency also encourages homeowners to take this time to check furnaces and any other appliances that might have been damaged in the Aug. 9-10 flooding that came with Tropical Storm Debby before it gets icy.

"If your furnace isn't working and it isn't covered by your insurance, you may be eligible to receive help from FEMA to repair or even replace it," the news release said.

Assistance from FEMA is limited to only owner-occupied primary homes, not vacation homes or second homes. In addition, home repair assistance is available to homeowners only for uninsured or underinsured disaster-damaged items that make residences safe, sanitary, secure and inhabitable. Households with damage to essential living spaces in a basement -- including garden apartments -- may also be eligible for FEMA assistance to help cover the losses.

"When you apply for assistance, be sure to indicate the furnace and other essential electrical appliances damaged during the summertime disaster," the news release said. "If you have already repaired or replaced the furnace, be prepared to provide FEMA with valid estimates or receipts."
