The Williamsport Area School District notified families of students Monday via email of a possible data breach that occurred in late December of 2024.

The incident “may have compromised the personal information of certain current and former WASD students and staff members,” the email said.

The district itself was not subject to the data breach, which affected a third-party vendor. The vendor, PowerSchool, has reached out to law enforcement and cybersecurity experts for an investigation.

According to the email, student names, Social Security numbers and other personal information may have been accessed.

“WASD is actively working with PowerSchool to gain additional information about the cybersecurity incident so that it can further assess the situation and take steps to protect and support all impacted individuals,” the email said.
