Motorcyclist killed, two others injured in violent Lycoming Township crash on Sunday

An elderly man was killed and his female passenger was critically injured when their three-wheel motorcycle and a black Nissan Altima collided at Lycoming Creek Road and Kenyon Avenue in Lycoming Township about 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

"It was horrific," said Casey Nicodemus, 37, of Lock Haven, who witnessed the crash.

"The motorcyclist were heading north on Lycoming Creek Road and collided with the black car as the driver was pulling out from Kenyon Avenue to head south on Lycoming Creek Road," he added.

"The operator of cycle was thrown 20 to 30 feet while his passenger was thrown 40 to 50 feet after the impact," Nicodemus said. Lycoming Regional police confirmed his account of the crash. The operator, who landed in the southbound lanes, was gravely injured and unresponsive, Nocodemus said. Concerning the passenger, "the woman's head was bleeding, and she was complaining of pain in her back and legs. She was conscious, but she suffered serious injuries," he added. She landed in the northbound lane, Nicodemus said.

Following the violent collision the Nissan continued into the southbound lanes, where it collided with a white Tesla, whose driver tried to slow down, but was unable to avoid the collision, Nicodemus said.

Nicodemus was visiting friends at Fairlawn Court and was in a yard with some children when he saw the crash. "It was just one big boom. Instantly, the two individuals were thrown off the cycle," he said, adding that there was no evidence that either one was wearing a helmet.

"A passerby, she said she was a nurse at UPMC, was driving by and she stopped and began CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) on the operator of the cycle," Nicodemus said. He too, along with others who came upon the crash, did whatever they could to help the man, but the operator was pronounced dead at the scene at 3 p.m. of blunt force trauma injuries, according to Lycoming County Coroner Charles E. Kiessling. He along with two deputy coroners as well as Lycoming Regional Police Chief Christopher Kriner responded to the crash to assist with the investigation.

The passenger on the cycle was rushed by ambulance to UPMC Williamsport. The driver of the Nissan also was taken to the hospital and undergoing treatment. The driver of the Tesla was not hurt, police said.

Lycoming Regional police, who provided primary police protection for Lycoming Township, was assisted at the crash site by state police.

Hepburn Township, Trout Run and Old Lycoming Township volunteer fire companies detoured traffic away from the scene for several hours. Lycoming Creek Road was closed from Beautys Run Road to Beech Street.

The identities of those involved in the crash were expected to be released later today. This was the second fatal motorcycle crash in the county in under two weeks. Cogan Metzger, 21, of the Warrensville Road area, was killed on June 18 when his cycle and a SUV collided at East Third Street and Old Montoursville Road in Loyalsock Township, state police said.
