Hughesville Borough Council mulls ambulance funding for 2026

Hughesville Borough Council will not pass its annual budget until December but is already being asked for next year’s funding commitments — at least from one organization.

Hughesville Vol. Fire Department Chief Bill Dorman asked council at its recent meeting to continue to support its ambulance service.

The borough’s allocation for 2025 amounted to $27,372, an amount that Dorman hopes to secure once again.

“We want to solidify what we are getting,” he said.

The ambulance crews serve residents in Hughesville, as well as Wolf and Penn townships.

The alternative, he said, is for the ambulance service to join an alliance that includes Muncy, Muncy Township, Picture Rocks and Lairdsville.

“We are exploring the options,” Dorman said.

Borough officials indicated they like having an ambulance more readily available to Hughesville residents rather service covering a larger geographical area under a five-municipality alliance.

“I look at response times,” Mayor Richard Smith said.

Councilman Jerry Daugherty said, “I’d like our ambulance to be here.”

In other matters, council discussed consulting with an arborist to consider what to do about the trees on Main Street.

The roots of some trees, it was noted, are impacting the street’s sidewalks.

Council also discussed replacing picnic tables at Bodine Park, noting that most if not all the tables in the park are in poor condition.

The next council meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, July 28 at the municipal building.

Starting at $2.99/week.
