A Montoursville man, his wife and their toddler were left homeless after a fire erupted late Sunday afternoon at the back of their home at 508 N. Washington St., according to borough Fire Chief Jeff Hutchins. The fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, he said.
Borough Patrolman Ron Bachman, the first on the scene, said he saw flames coming from underneath the porch deck and reaching the roofline about 5:15 p.m.
"I was given a garden hose. I went up on the deck and started hosing it down," Bachman said.
Nobody was home at the time. The home owner, Timothy Ungard Jr., wasn't far away. He came running back after getting a call that his house was on fire, Bachman said.
"I responded from the police station. As soon as I came down Loyalsock Avenue, I could see the smoke," the officer said.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross was assisting the displaced family. The cause of the fire remained under investigation, Hutchins said.
