The City of Williamsport is experiencing a boom in building permits thus far in the year.
The jump in building permit revenue went from $459,000 last year at this time to $783,000, said Jamie Livermore, city finance director. Her update was provided in a budget report to the city finance committee.
"I am excited to see that building permits jump," said Councilwoman Liz Miele, finance committee chair.
The city can use all the push forward on the revenue side that it can as it faces a budget deficit of at least $3 million in 2026, according to analysis by Public Financial Management, Philadelphia, a firm working with the city on its strategic management plan. The deficit could be that much or on up to $4.6 million if nothing were to be done.
The firm is expected to return to the council with recommendations on how to close the budget gap. Everything will be on the table, said Gordon Mann, PFM managing director.
In other budget updates, the proper tax revenue is coming in, Livermore said.
The city is on track with surplus sales of mostly older items, she said.
"Nothing in departmental budgets looks off," she said.
Overtime is expected to increase during the Little League World Series, she added.
