‘Williamsport Welcomes the World’ back Friday — with World Series champion Johnny Damon

Johnny Damon, two-time World Series champion, once with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and once with the New York Yankees in 2009, will appear at the annual Williamsport Welcomes the World Friday and the following day be at the Little League Challenger Division Exhibition Game at the Little League World Series complex at Volunteer Stadium.

Damon will greet Major League Baseball and Little League Baseball fans from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. outside of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, 102 W. Fourth St., said Jason Fink, Chamber president and CEO.

The following day, Damon will serve as third base coach for the Little League Challenger Division Exhibition Game, an annual highlight of the Little League World Series, showcasing the spirit of inclusion and fun for athletes with physical and intellectual challenges.

The Little League Challenger Division Exhibition Game, presented by Eggland’s Best, will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Volunteer Stadium.

Williamsport Welcomes the World is sponsored by the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, Visitors Bureau, and the City of Williamsport.

More than 20,000 people participated in last year’s event.

Williamsport Welcomes the World is from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday in downtown Williamsport with street closures during this time to allow for pedestrians to stroll downtown in a safe, relaxed, and fun atmosphere.

During this celebration, visitors join baseball fans and the community to welcome the teams in a street festival that has a variety of programs including live music, kids zones, with free activities, along with various food and merchandise vendors.

The Central Business District merchants burst with a welcoming energy as thousands of people take part in the street festival between Market and Hepburn streets and on several intersecting streets.
