Community invited to open house at County Farm

Lycoming’s County Farm Committee is hosting an open house at the county farm on County Farm Road, Montoursville on September 18 from 4 p.m. to 8 p. m. The public will have an opportunity to learn about conservation practices that farmers use to decrease soil loss and reduce water pollution.

There will be hands-on learning opportunities for youngsters. Children will also have the opportunity to learn about 4H. There will also be an opportunity to learn about farms through the use of virtual reality headsets and an opportunity to watch cover crops being planted by drone. Restaurateurs will have the opportunity to network with several local farm businesses to possibly establish “Farm-to-Table” partnerships.

For the farming community, there will be representatives from farm machinery, seed,drone seeding and spraying, cattle feeding, crop insurance and livestock nutrition companies as well as the state farm bureau.

Government entities that will be

present include USDA NRCS, USDA FSA, Pheasants Forever, The USA FSA Beginning Farmer Program and the Lycoming County Conservation District. Penn State Extension will also talk about research plots that are being used on the County Farm.

The County Farm is located on County Farm Road Montoursville. From East Third Street or Broad Street Montoursville, take Warrensville Road. County Farm Road is approximately two miles north on the right hand side of Warrensville Road.
