Hughesville business official demands action from borough council

The president of the Greater Hughesville Business Association wants borough officials to do their part toward sprucing up parts of the downtown that appear shabby.

Robin Landgrebe noted that high weeds, broken glass, overgrown poison sumac, and boarded up storefronts are some of the more conspicuous eyesores along Main Street.

Why, she asked, is codes enforcement not doing its job?

“We take pride in our business district,” Landgrebe said.

Mayor Richard Smith and Borough Council President Andrew Mook said they are more than aware of some of the issues.

“It’s tough making people do things they don’t want to do,” Smith said.

“We are trying,” Mook said.

Borough Solicitor Scott Williams said property owners who receive notices of codes violations will choose to pay a fine without addressing the problem.

Municipal officials noted that there is apparently no code violation for boarded up storefronts.

Landgrebe said the community needs to put on its best face to attract future business to Hughesville.

“As an association we know of people who want to come in,” she said.

On a related note, Kelley Sprout told council that areas of the borough have sidewalks in disrepair.

Sprout, who is blind and often walks about the community, noted that Cemetery Street is of particular concern.

The borough is requiring property owners with sidewalks not in compliance with borough code to either replace the walks or repair them.

“Do something before someone like me really gets hurt,” Sprout said.

Council agreed to set Trick or Treat in Hughesville for Friday, Oct. 31, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Trick or Treat will follow the annual Halloween Parade in the community.

Council met in an executive session following the meeting to consider personnel matters.

The next borough meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8 at the municipal building, 147 S. Fifth St., Hughesville.

Starting at $2.99/week.
