Reading man remains in critical condition after Monday’s crash on Route 15

PHILIP HOLMES/Sun-Gazette

Eric Diaz, 49, of Reading, a front seat passenger in this Mazda CX-5, was listed in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, with injuries he suffered when a loose tire crashed into the car’s windshield while driver Jessica Stebbins, 38, also of Reading, was traveling south on Route 15 in Armstrong Township about 1:30 p.m. Monday, state police said.

The front left tire came off a Ford Fusion driven by Alex Hughes, of Douglasville, Berkshire County, who was traveling north, police said. He was not hurt, they said.

“The wheel bounced over a concrete barrier and into the path of Stebbins’ car” before crashing into the windshield and “penetrating” the interior of the car, police said.

The wheel then struck the left front side of a second northbound vehicle, whose driver was not hurt, police said. Stebbins and a juvenile in her car suffered minor to moderate injuries, police said.

In another incident, Justin Stackhouse, 32, of Unityville, remained in critical condition at Geisinger with injuries he suffered Saturday night in an ATV crash in front of the Unityville firehouse.

Starting at $2.99/week.
