DEP investigates discharge into Susquehanna near Hepburn Street
A member of the state Department of Environmental Protection Agency’s Emergency Response Team was dispatched on Sunday afternoon for a report of an unknown discharge entering the West Branch Susquehanna River at the Hepburn Street Flood Control Station in Williamsport.
DEP met with officials from the Williamsport Bureau of Fire and Williamsport Municipal Water Authority/Williamsport Sanitary Authority (WMWA-WSA) at the scene and observed a silt or clay discharge with no petroleum sheen or odor, according to Megan Lehman, regional communications manager, DEP Office of Communications Northcentral Regional Office.
The source of the discharge was a water line break in the 900 block of Vallamont Drive, in the city, which had reached the stormwater system.
Water had been turned off to the broken section of pipe and repair work was underway at the time DEP left the scene.
