Painter’s plein air series showcasing Williamsport’s historic building on show at Herdic House

On a sunny October afternoon in Montgomery Park in Montgomery, Beth DeJesus England is doing what she is best known for – painting outside. Referred to as plein air, she is painting what she calls the “bridge to nowhere.”

Her impressionistic style captures the color and feel of the foot bridge with leaves scattered upon it.

Now the public can appreciate England’s work with her exhibition of oil paintings at Williamsport’s Herdic House until Nov. 4, featuring her work of historic buildings in the city.

The prolific painter took less than six months to create the pieces for the show.

“I started painting in May and started with the Herdic House,” said England.

She credits Victorian Christmas’ annual tour of local homes for her inspiration to paint the historic structures lining Millionaire’s Row on Fourth Street in Williamsport.

“I’ve had such an amazing time creating this series,” says England. “Along the way, I’ve met so many kind and interesting people, who make Williamsport’s historic district feel alive. I’m excited to finally share these works with the community.”

While painting one home, she was met by a man who had painted the exterior of her subject and they soon became friends.

“It was a gold house that he had painted and the color is what attracted me to the house,” said England.

The 10 oil paintings on display demonstrate her love of impressionism. England’s subjects include Park Place, Gap Fellowship Church, Embick Cottage and more. All were painted plein air.

“The best part about painting outside is that the fumes don’t bother me. The light changes. So, it can be a challenge,” said England.

England is a true renaissance woman. In addition to visual art, she is also a busy musician. She plays fiddle, violin and rubboard in local bands that include Shoofly and Wild Honey.

Her repertoire ranges from bluegrass to country. She also sits in with bands and recently recorded the song “Lena” with JJ Gair, which is now getting airplay locally and on Spotify and iTunes.

England recently played at the Forksville Inn and Tavern in Forksville on Saturday with Shoofly. Coming up on Saturday, Dec. 13, Wild Honey will perform at the Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company in Cogan Station from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m., for the fundraiser Toys for Kids.

During her career as a visual artist, she has produced and sold hundreds of prints and paintings. Not all of them have been oil or plein air. She also uses water color.

Recently, England won first place at The Wellsboro Wilds Plein Air Festival. Artists were given the challenge of creating an oil painting in less than two hours in the Quick Draw competition.

England has been commissioned often to paint pieces for a number of clients. Those requests have ranged from recreating a family’s home to painting a wedding ceremony.

The artist is proud to be part of the Bald Eagle Art League, which is a community of local artists.

“There are so many talented artists,” she said.

As England takes a step back from her painting of the bridge, she notes that the season’s autumnal colors have not quite arrived.

“I’m adding leaf color,” England said about her taking artistic license with the yet unnamed piece.

With a few more strokes of oil, she feels the piece is finished.

England grabs a fine brush to add her name, saying, “It’s done. I don’t want to overwork it.”
