Montoursville board talks state budget, school name change

The Montoursville Area School Board is cool to the idea of passing a resolution urging the state Legislature to bring an end to the budget impasse.

Without a spending plan in place, public school districts are without some of the funding they annually receive for their educational programs.

Montoursville Superintendent Dan Taormina told the board at its recent meeting that districts are considering such resolutions.

“We could put it in on the next meeting agenda,” he said.

But school directors balked at such action.

“I don’t think it needs to be on the agenda,” Board President Todd Badger said.

Sharon Meyer agreed with Badger.

Ron Snell, a district resident and former board member, said many districts are doing just fine financially for now without those additional dollars from the state.

“There is (sic) billions of dollars in reserve funds in school districts in Pennsylvania if you put them together,” he said. “Yet, they cry about the state budget not being passed.”

State lawmakers failed to approve a state budget by the June 30 deadline.

In other matters, Taormina asked the board to consider possibly renaming Lyter Elementary School upon completion of its expansion.

Once Loyalsock Valley Elementary School closes its doors, all elementary students in the district will be at Lyter.

“Do we keep the name of Lyter once the schools are merged?” he asked. “It could be called Montoursville Area Elementary School.”

Board members agreed that it will be important for the community to have a say on the issue.

In personnel matters, the board approved the following personnel for coaching positions: Jared Lehman, ninth grade boys basketball, $2,800; Travis Wurster, eighth grade boys basketball, $2,600, and Craig Weaver, seventh grade boys basketball, $2,600.

The board approved the resignation of Ella Rossman, long-term substitute teacher and added Thomas Coon to the bus driver list.

School directors approved on second reading a policy on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education.

The next school board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 at the high school.

Starting at $2.99/week.
