After allegedly pointing a handgun at South Williamsport and state troopers inside his borough home on Fairmont Avenue on Saturday morning, 49-year-old Michael Hughes was shot and killed, state police confirmed in a news release.
No one else was injured in the shooting that took place at 705 Fairmont Ave., just south of East 7th Avenue, about 9:30 a.m.
State troopers and borough police responded to the home to investigate a report that Hughes was allegedly “threatening to shoot someone with a gun,” it was stated in the release, which was issued by Trooper Lauren Lesher, the public information officer at the Troop F barracks in Montoursville.
“The troopers and officers made contact with the homeowner, a member of Hughes’ family, and were invited into the residence. Upon entry, Hughes brandished a weapon at the troopers, and shots were fired,” killing Hughes, Lesher said.
Investigators have not commented on how many shots were fired or if Hughes fired his weapon before being killed. At this point, investigators have not said if the shots came from the troopers, borough police or both.
Following the shooting at least a dozen more state troopers rushed to the home and began processing the scene, which took most of the day. Among those who responded were Lt. Christine Fye, head of the Criminal Investigation Division at the Montoursville barracks.
Two deputy coroners arrived at the scene about 11 a.m. and pronounced Hughes dead. His body was taken to the Forensic Center at UPMC Williamsport.
“As per regulations, all persons involved in this incident have been placed on administrative leave pending a complete and thorough joint investigation with the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office, Lesher said. “The investigation remains active and ongoing,” she added.
